Who would’ve thought we’d be in the last week of 2020 and still be in a world-wide pandemic?! However, with the vaccines coming out, we are all holding our breathes waiting for that moment that we can collectively exhale with relief.
2020 has been challenging, so it’s no surprise that you may want to travel to get away from it all! We have all seen tons of influencers and even friends go on vacations, Mexico being the favorite. Pero like, we are still in a global pandemic!
I am here to offer some safer alternatives to your traditional, international, and airplane travel.
Please remember to: Be safe, do you research, follow local mandates, and PLEASE wear your mask!
I am listing travel ideas from MOST to LEAST risky:
1. Road trip off the beaten path-
- Take a road trip to an unpopulated location. Stay away from any densely populated city or major metro area.
- Find a beautiful remote spot to GET AWAY from people! Trust me, this is the best way to truly unwind, relax, and re-charge.
Safety Tips:
- Try to make minimal stops, and always wear your mask when entering shared spaces such as gas station bathrooms.
- Always opt for takeout or a drive-thru.
- If you must stay at an AirBnb or hotel make sure to check that the room is empty 1- 2 nights between guests and ask what other safety protocols are being followed. Bring plenty of sanitizing wipes to clean the surfaces in your hotel such as door knobs, light switches, and the nightstand.
2. Day trip, but keep it outdoors-
- Take a day trip to a location that is between 1-2 hours away from your home. You can go, explore, and drive back home the same day.
- Find a beautiful outdoor location such as the ocean, take a hike, find a creek or stream, go to a park, or visit a field of flowers.
- While you’re there take in the scenery, breathe, and be grateful to be on this beautiful earth.
Safety Tips:
- To reduce exposure; bring food and drinks and treat yourself to a picnic.
3. Go remote-
- Find a remote campsite close to home, that way you’re not making any pitstops along the way and if you regret it you can just drive back and sleep in your own bed. LOL.
- Leave your phone in the car and enjoy nature. The more we connect with nature and with loved ones the more we realize their importance over anything on our phones.
- Bring a journal and write about what you see, how you feel, etc. That way when you’re home you can re-read your journal and put yourself in that situation again and feel grateful.
Safety Tips:
- If you’re going to relieve yourself in the wild, make sure you know the proper way to do it without impacting the environment. Link Here.
- If using shared bathrooms, wear your mask.
4. Take a drive-
- Check out this Thrillist article that lists the most scenic drives in every state!
- Get lost on purpose! Sometimes I just start driving and take a turn that I’ve never taken before and explore the new scenery.
- You don't have to go far! No matter where you live, I know for a fact that you have not explored every inch of it. Find joy in exploring your home location and find the beauty in the small things.
5. Read an adventure book-
- Read a book and immerse yourself in the adventure along with the characters of the novel. Check out Barnes and Noble “50 Adventure Novels You Have to Read Before You Die.”
- My favorite adventure book is The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. It takes place in Paris and Spain in the 1920s. You follow the party life of the expat Jake Barnes as he travels to Pamplona for the running of the bulls. You'll feel like you’re there partying with the guys and it opened my eyes about traveling to Pamplona and the Spanish countryside to fish and take naps just like Jake.
- Plus, reading is a great distraction and before you know it the world will be open again.
- Additional plus, reading makes you less stressed, smarter, and personally more attractive ;)
Ending rant… Take a moment and enjoy the place you’re in, enjoy being home, enjoy spending time with loved ones (safely). So often we take our days for granted. Instead of being present, we live today wishing it was tomorrow. We live today waiting for our next vacation or our next job or our next anything! One of the best ways I have fought this feeling is by being purposeful with my time and doing things like starting this website, learning, or writing in my journal.
Let’s remember that this pandemic is not a life sentence and it will be over soon enough.
Girl, we got this! Let’s be safe and make smart choices.
Thanks for reading. Ciao!
Andrea
